The Wherehouse in downtown Silver City is now climate controlled (cool!) and the Virus Theater is set to perform a new original play there in July. Virus Theater has been working on the prouction since January. The play, titled "Zocaloco", is loosely based on the Italian Commedia Dell Arte style and uses masked characters in performance. The style is sometimes cartoonish, sometimes magical, and always hilarious. Virus Theater members Andrew Tegarden and Teresa Dahl-Bredine led mask and Commedia workshops for the troupe's actors after studying at the Dell Arte School of Physical Performance in Blue Lake, California.
The title "Zocaloco" comes from the Spanish word "zocalo", a town square. The story revolves around characters from the town square, including an ice cream man, a greedy landlady and her goofball servant, a lovely young woman stuck for a decade on her balcony overlooking the square, her angry misery old father, and a set of nine-year-old twins. The twins are inspired by the ice cream man's dream to embark on a journey in search of their mother. The journey leads them, and their pursuers, to a strange and magical world.

The play opens on Friday, July 8th and runs through Sunday, July 24th on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Showtime is 8pm. Tickets are $10 and are available in advance at Yada Yada Yarn. The Wherehouse has limited seating, so advance tickets are recommended. The first two Sundays, July 10th and 17th, are "Pay What You Can", meaning that any amound will be accepted for admission as long as seats are available. The theater troupe does this to encourage people who might not otherwise afford live theater to come to the show. "Zocaloco" is rated PG13 for language. If you have any questions about whether or not the show is appropriate for your children please contact director Teresa Dahl-Bredine at teresadahlbredine@virustheater.com .
