Bandito Street Blues*- A fantastical story of a woman searching for her lover captured and tortured for political reasons. The underworld gangsters who hold him are made up of strange animalistic characters. This was the first original play created by this group. Without an element of cruely at the root of every spectacle, the theatre is not possible. In our present state of degeneration it is through the skin that metaphysics must be made to re-enter our minds...Admittedly or not, conscious or unconscious, the poetic state, a transcendent experience of life, is what the public is fundamentally seeking through love, crime, drugs, war, or insurrection -Antonin Artaud (TheTheatre of Cruelty) |
We are talking about profanation. What, in fact, is this but a kind of tactlessness based on the brutal confrontation between our declarations and our daily actions, between the experience of our forefathers which lives within us and our search for a comfortable way of life or our conception of a struggle for survival, between our individual complexes and those of society as a whole? -Jerzy Grotowski (Towards a Poor Theatre) |
In a living theatre, we would each day approach the rehearsal putting yesterday's discoveries to the test, ready to believe that the true play has once again escaped us. But the Deadly Theater approaches the classics from the viewpoint that somewhere, someone has found out and defined how the play should be done. -Peter Brook (The Empty Space) |
